For quite some time i have been thinking of making a microcontroller board which can be programmed using free tools.

Just a thought

if you want to go the easy route buy a SILabs f120DK.

You get
* of all 'eval' Keil compilers, the least restricted (4k)
* ICE functionality for debugging
* a working board with download from PC via USB
* a power supply
* the fastest, most capable '51 there is
* 128k code memory 8k data memory

all for $99.
