I know that in the olden days when the king of diamonds were still just a jack, we saved RAM and saved RAM because it was expensive, not to mention that 8k was "the norm". but, just for a moment, let us leave history and look at electronics:

Why the interest in usng multiple RAM chips, here is an example from digikey 128k*8 for $2 (in volume).
