Actually, i wanted to do the simple things first, and then delve into I2C or SPI busses in later projects. One-step-at-a-time, as they say.

I think you can forget aboot 1), and go straight to 2)

If you use modern derivatives (many from Philips, Atmel etc) you ger hardware IIC and the code is available free by using CodeArchitect free from http://www.esacademy.com I would consider that a "simple thing"

The thing that worries me the most is that you have mentioned "students" and teacing using outmoded technology definitely is no favor to a student.

Well, I had to use multiple read/writes for 8255 parts only.
I will bet you that "multiple writes" is not making it 100.000%
