I am putting pics of some PCBs of mine, all single sided:
========================================================= 1. All components and jumpers on one side, no ground plane, but I paid the price: I had many spurious triggers, resets, and all.. 
========================================================= 2. The crystal dint even oscillate in this PCB, you can notice that the crystal is missing. 
The above two boards were hand-drawn, so as 100s of other PCBs by me. I recently discovered and perfected the cheap toner transfer system. ============================================================== 3. This is the layout of 'improved' design, I filled all bare areas with copper and connected to ground, and I had less jumpers. I now design and fabricate boards of this quality (using toner transfer).
