I'd guess that those cases that require both the ports and the external memory for data space or expanded code space can use one of the large-pin-count parts and get the job done.
all my designs is one of 2: internal RAM only (66x/LPC9xx/f12x/f13x/Rx2) or 8 port devices with external RAM (f12x/f13x). I have NO designs with bank switching slowing everything down. Never code beyond 64k and "real" (on demand only) access beyond 64k of data.
