IMHO on an ASIC project with such a low projected volume,

If indeed it is "I must also have such a thing", then mentioning cost concerns is ridiculous.

Some want "the latest technology" just because it is, but combining that with small production parts cost concerns will never work (1000 units is small in this case).

I do appreciate those that use "the latest technology", bless them, if nobody got volume to the new parts, they would stay too costly for most of us to use. HOWEVER, "the latest technology" can not uncritically be combined with cost concerns. Just uncritically using "the latest technology" does not equal cost saving.
I remember, long ago, working in a place where we really could use a FET when it was first introduced, we bought them for $120 ea. and for that project what a FET could do was more important than that cost.
