Is there anything in USB bus analysis that cannot be captured by a suitable general-purpose logic analyser/oscilloscope? Anything without digital storage would probably be useless for all but the most basic signal-level checks. A general purpose digital storage scope (DSO) or logic analyser will only show you the bit level; it will not understand the USB protocol - debugging higher-level stuff like enumeration, etc, would probably be extremely tedious at the bit level...! Triggering is also likely to be tricky. For a general purpose scope, trace length (memory depth) may well be an issue. Having said that, both Agilent (nee HP) and Tektronix certainly have add-ons for their (higher-end?) DSOs to give them serial protocol analysis features... Probably others, too. |
