We had the same problem when Atmel discontinued the AT89C52 and we had to switch to the AT89S52. They are different in programming.
Check your programmer and see if the S52 version is listed as a supported device. I ended up buying a couple of the Xeltek Superpro /Z programmers and they are working great.
