Atmel checks for you if the flash cells are "charged" enough... just, well, I would never call that process "charging".

The FLASH erasing/programming is - in each and every chip I know - so called "self-timed", the only way how can you spoil it is to disconnect the power while programming. The power source and the timing is all internally built into the chip.

This was not the case with EPROMs, so the caution with under/over"charging" is valid there. But, EPROMs are slightly out of date todat, aren't they.
