When a guy says I want to use a <insert device name here> with a <insert other device name here> I'm not at all sure it helps to start asking questions about WHY he wants to do that, though they might come up in the course of the discussion. Much of the time, that question is presented as, "Why would you be so dumb as to want to do that?" I doubt that would encourage me to expose my ignorance any further.

If, for example, he wants to use a 74C922, perhaps there is a reason, or perhaps it's just because he thought it would be a good thing to try. He's probably not going into production. He's probably not going to ruin the design of a piece of life-saving medical equipment. He just wants to try out that particular device. It may be because it save pins he needs for something else. Why does it matter?

Engineers are famous for wanting to share their knowledge. It's more helpful, however, if they limit their sharing to subjects relevant to the specified topic, at least in a general sense.
