There is still a very large amount of the current Consumer electronic gear using through-hole!
I'm thinking things like HiFi, Clock-Radios, etc.

Yes, the micrcontroller would normally be surface-mount (or even a bare die under a blob of plastic), but the rest would be through-hole.
