#130936 - Pb solder... Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Richard,
(wearing my isotope geologist's hat now...) Most lead found on this planet is a decay byproduct of uranium. Which means that most lead has minute, but detectable amounts of uranium in it. Most people don't know it, but U-238 is radioactive. It has a half life of 4.51 x 10^9 years, and decays by alpha to Pb-206. The particles get ejected with substantial energy, and you can actually date a rock by counting the fission tracks in an electron microscope. So why am I bringing this up??? At current integration levels, lead solder, containing minute traces of uranium poses a bit-flip risk to the circuitry. It has bitten several large manufacturers that should have known better. Those Pb free packages are more than just a feel good measure. Rob |
