The term 'OS' goes back a long way - way before my entry into computing. The term probably predates the use of multitasking and memory protection.
CP/M could probably be better described as a 'disk operating system' as this is primarily what it does. If we have an 'OS' that is not real-time, what do we call it? Simply 'OS' to differentiate it from a 'RTOS'? The PDP11 had a variety of OS's. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDP-...ng_systems As an operating system, how would you describe UNIX?
