The FAQ, which is suppoded to be general, end up being specific. That is the problem with FAQs, they will be applied generally, however specific they may be. Thus, e.g. the freewheling diode in a FAQ should not have a type number attached, and either rules for selection or a table of types for various purposes should be provided. Yes, when exchanging the switching transistor by a much faster one, you can even run into trouble with the 1N4002! who want to bet that nobody ever is going to substitute the transistor - not me. I have absolutotally no problem with the FAQ approach, but when entering a FAQ THINK about the i.. eh distinguished persons that will read and apply them and the substitutions that invariably will be made.
