Not that I like this solution, but wouldn't a pullup from the transistor's base to +5V help?

However, I would rather use (ULN)2803/2003 (purists may use 2804/2004) for this purpose. Toshiba makes them as xxx62803 (I can't recall the letters/prefix, but one usually gets confused by the extra "6"), and they are heavily seconbd sourced under the generic name (I think we use mainly ST).

PS. I just grabbed one of those... it says, TOSHIBA and ULN2803... :-)

PS2: Of course, there are 8/7 drivers per package, so it's not quite justified for only 1 output...
