You could use

MOVC A,A+@DPTR

with a global column count, in a register, perhaps, to get the current bit pattern. How, exactly, you implement this depends on how you implement and time your display hardware, e.g. whether you scroll frm left to right or right to left, whether you scan from right to left or left to right, etc.
