  • inadequate/incomplete reset (usage of RC-reset)
  • usage of protoboards with lousy contacts


Start maybe with putting a 100nF cap between the GND and VCC pins of the chip (solder it DIRECTLY on the pins) and PLEASE do use a reset IC. Also, check your power supply - spurious resets indicate problematic power.
