In practice, it is possible that the ON-resistance of the output transistors, plus an LED forward voltage drop, is such that the current cannot generally get high enough to destroy the transistor - but the datasheet does not guarantee this!

So, it might be OK for a hobbyist project, or a cheap throw-away toy - but it should certainly not be taken as a general principle of good design!
