When I read that WalMart was taking inventory by pushing a cart with the receiver equipment on it down the aisles of their stores in order to take inventory, thereby supporting their "just-in-time" stocking/ordering policies, I was curious how such devices work. Clearly there's some mechanism by means of which they control who talks at any given time.

I do wonder what that mechanism is.
