sure I can, and as far as I know using SDCC (the no cost alternative) has no IDE associated with it.

This is the same as "I need external code memory and a 8255 interface" which, often, it would be a total mistake to help a newbie with since the only reason for his "need" is that he got hold of a book printed in 1985.

If a newbie is convinced he "need" something that he does not need, what is wrong in pointing that out. I remember many cases in my early years where I got severely burned because I were convinced I "needed" something.
