My takeaway from that three year experience in futility was to not ever trust someone who says that they have to first make their own assembler before they can make the product program when there are viable commercial choices available for a couple hundred dollars that can run on hardware that is widely available. I'm giving you "+1 Good Answer" because I agree with what you're saying in a commercial sense. But I would also say there's certainly great benefit in getting to know an architecture at a level that you can write an assembler or, better yet, a compiler. It wouldn't make sense from a business standpoint, but if his goal is to become more familiar with the architecture or become more familiar with compiler/assembler design, his efforts are not in vain and, in fact, are extremely beneficial. It all depends on his reasons for wanting to write an assembler. Regards, Craig Steiner |
