Why use a stupid PIG? Thgere are plenty small cheapies in the '51 line.
all my "little offload cheapie uCs" are Ph.. ARGH! NXP LPCs. Using these you get IIC hardware and the interface to the 'mother' is a breeze (even the software is served to you on a silver platter). Using a NXP LPC and CodeArchitect, you can make a slave uC UART in an hour or so. Well, when you have done that and it works, it will dawn on you that you can do so much more (validate records, echo transmission, .....) in a slave than with an external UART (which cost more) and you will suddenly realize that the $1 you spent for the LPC is the best dollar you have spent in a long time.
