If the 'defined time' is within the requirements for that system then it is 'real time'. This is the crux of it - the requirements of a real time system are individual to each system. There is no global timing specification that differentiates between real time and not real time. So, my definition of "real time" is NOW I have some bad news for you - 'now' is not achievable. Taking your falling in the river analogy as a perfect example, 'immediately' is impossible. You may get pulled out within a few seconds, but there is no possibility you will be pulled out 'now' (assuming that 'now' is the moment you fell in rather than some other convenient value for 'now' which coincides with the moment you were pulled out). Why do I use URTOS/DTOS or whatever? to stress that these thing have nothing to do with the webster definition of "real time" Do you mean this?: http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/real%20time For those who don't want to follow the link here is the definition: Main Entry: real time Function: noun : the actual time during which something takes place <the computer may partly analyze the data in real time (as it comes in)> That doesn't seem compatible with your definition of real time. If that isn't the definition you were referring to, please link to the appropriate one. Now, after I have told you "what I do think it actually does mean" you will come back and tell me what it means in the URTOS context and I could'nt care less, because that "meaning" is a misapplication of the expression (as admitted even by you) whether "generally accepted" or not. I wish you'd stop trying to muddy the waters with your invented terms. I assume that you mean 'RTOS' when you say 'URTOS'. As I said before, in my opinion the expression 'real time' is a poor choice for what it describes, but this does not take away from the fact that it does exist and, no matter how hard you battle against it, it does have a definition. |
