I am being forced to use a protocol that has already been in use for a number of years, and which is totally unsuitable for this extra unit.

The rest of the system uses variable length packets (1-255 bytes) whilst this unit will need to be able to pick out just 7 bytes from the multi-drop per minute and respond accordingly.

They haven't implemented hardware addressing either.
