There is a quote about how all large projects that work are based on small projects that work.

Take your display and cpu and make a basic chess clock. Worry about battery life and the switch later. From beginner to saleable product is a big leap. You can add the BCD switches, or change displays later. You will at least have a platform to try out new ideas. you may not end up with a product, but you will have the best chess clock around.
