I checked the DigiKey catalog and the AT89S51 seems to be available in 0.10".
The part number is AT89S51-24PC-ND and the packaging is 40P6, PDIP.
The spacing is e=2.54 mm.

I'd originally planned on using the AT89S2051 but it's not in stock there and I guess it's time to find an alternative. The obvious thing looks like having another AT89S51, but it draws 25 mA -- isn't that a bit high? I was thinking of four alkaline AAs with capacity of 2500 mAh each, does that sound okay? Anyone?

I was going to go with a cheap, flat plastic box that probably wouldn't have enough room for those batteries, but your suggestion for a nice wooden box sounds interesting. I might as well do it right if it's a one-off!
