...it IS definitely the ignition system.

The engine is just a 'novelty' model engine that I made that runs on the workbench. The reason why I was 'blaming' the points is that the hall sensor is mounted within about 2cm of them and they tend to be a bit sparky.

I will, however, get this project onto a proper PCB and then follow all the advice mentioned here. The problem is that I will be needing to upgrade it every few weeks as the system evolves into something more complicated - I guess that's half the fun.
