If it is a model internal combustion engine that uses a glow plug - there is no electromagnetic interference since there is no spark - so you may be able to rule that out as a source of interference. Also remember that the instantaneous speed can vary by a few rpm. In the tacho code i've previously done I filter the rpm values so the value is readable rather than jumping all over the place.

What type of engine are you trying to measure?
