He means you should take the average of 4 rpm readings (say) at a time before you display them. This way you get a smooth display of rpm.
The trick is to add 4 readings together then right shift 2 times to do it real fast.
You can take power of 2s readings so that you get the divide by 2, 4, 8 etc real fast by right shifting.
I learnt this technique from the forum here, and it gave excellent results when I was displaying rpm of a car on LCD.
