If your pdf reader cannot understand pdf 1.5 documents (version is at the beginning of the pdf file itself in readable form), it's time to upgrade the reader.
Note, Acrobat Reader is not the only option. You can try also Foxit and/or ghostscript+GSReader (Win port of a Linux tool, primarily for postscript files).
