I'm a student who has taken a project that's possibly overly ambitious. Sounds like it. The first problem is I can't find it for sale, no one seems to stock the 8051/2. Cars are just like the model T ford, 4 wheels and an engine, but you can't get model T' s anymore either. The naked 8052 is technically obsolete, we have much better devices now, which derive from the original family, and share the instruction set. The original device was mask programmed in the factory. One thing I hear is that some models come with RS232 support. I take it this means I can solder my microcontroller onto the final PCB and build myself an RS232 interface directly onto my application? There is no great difficulty in building an RS232 interface -its only one device. You really want something like the 89C51 from Phillips or the equivalent from Atmel. A very rough calculation suggests I need a per-instruction execution time of perhaps 100ns - is this feasible? That depends too much on deep knowledge of the processor, and what you need to do, but devices from Dallas, Si-labs and Philips are quite fast enough. Steve |
