Hi Jez, the greenhouse project sounds interesting.

The motor is actually DC, there are a lot of wires connected to the motor (making it look like a stepper).
These wires connect to an encoder wheel placed on the spindle, which is actually under the black cap on the backside of the motor.

These motors are used a lot in Lexmark printer accessories.

I find DC motors are better for moving a robot then stepper motors. Steppers require too much power and are very slow compared to DC motors. The only advantage steppers have is precision, which aren't needed in my robotic projects.
