The old 804x types had the advantage that you could address and read/write them in a "normal" bus cycle from an 808x or 805x. How long it took them to complete a given command or to report a given status, other than primary status, was quite dependent on the code they executed. At 6 MHz, it took about 2.5 microseconds to execute a single-cycle instruction. As you can imagine, for many tasks they were quite slow.

How fast can you reliably operate a bussed IIC, i.e. how long between transactions? Can that report primary status, i.e. can you poll it within a microsecond? I find that a microsecond is sort of a milestone. If it can be polled at that rate, it will work out for many applications that become cumbersome if it takes two or more.
