i have done, I do not know how many IIC interfaces but I never hung.

It seems to me that the SMB timeout is an answer to those that "design by testing". I guess the origin of the SMBus is that some "designer" that had a marginal IIC interface banged on a manufacturers door with a 10.000.000 piece purchase order and said "my IIC bus hangs, fix it".
