Years ago we built a long shift register with some exclusive-ORs and feedback within...basically hardware random number generator. Then we took this long shift register, "bent" it at some point and connect the "x" and "y" outputs with LEDs. The result wass an array of LEDs that blink randomly in interesting patterns. The longer the shift register, the bigger the array. A friend built one small enough to be a pendant you could wear-- it would be so much easier to do today with SMT components! A uC to implement it or control it would increase the possibilities.
