If you go to grocery store here in Canada, you will see Pound and kg on the same tag. We still say we want one pound or two pounds, I haven't heard any body said I want 1 kg something in the stores.
I think it was about 40 years after the Danish "metric law" that I heard, for the first time, "I want 100g of this and a kilo of that" When I grew up everybody asked for pounds of things and all prices were per metric unit. Thus the "500g pound". Oddly enough I never heard any volume measure except liter with and without multipliers (e.g. coal was sold in hl).
