Users would certainly not want to have one connector dangling in the air. Worse yet, dumb users might plug both of them in. Don't give the users the chance to make dumb mistakes. What does the USB spec say about using the USB socket for non-USB purposes...? Probably, nothing. As long as the device behaves according to the spec when it is connected to a USB host, it should not matter what it does when connected to something else as this is entirely outside the scope of the USB spec. The arrangement of having mice/keyboards that can be plugged into either PS/2 or USB (via an adaptor) seems to be very common. |
