Programming in C was difficult earlier, because of limited ram and incompletely developed tools.
But today( at least since 6 years ago), more powerful chips have become cheaper e.g. RD series of Philips. And tools have vastly improved, e.g. Raisonance and Keil.
So do take a look at C for embedded systems.
