The last time I worked on a shuttle project was in '89, but I doubt they were using 8080's after that. In '86, when I worked on the Shuttle "Return-to-Flight" mission, the smallest computers on the shuttle were the Honeywell 516 clones that were used in redundant pairs as the main engine controllers.
There were no microcomputers of any sort on the thing then. The 8080 was already history back then, and, at a minimum, they'd have used 8085's, since they're object-code compatible. My team thoroughly examined every bit of logic in that domain, and and found no MOS microprocessors. There was a rumor that a 680x0-based controller was being considered as a replacement for the plated-wire based engine controllers. That's quite a leap from the 8080. RE |
