I suppose because I learned this the hard way under gate-level design strategies, I came to the "textbook" solution first and on my own, 25 years ago. It doesn't make his solution in any way less correct, and, in fact, as I mentioned, it probably makes no difference in performance or resource consumption, since (a) the use of a single macrocell or LUT is sufficient, and (b) no matter how it's expressed, the software will reduce it to its minimum, at least from the standpoint of implementation.
