Do yourself a favor and use something different....The Aspire IDE is a real kludge.

making the leap from computer land to real hardware is taking me some time so the simpler the better right now.

Simpler???
running into an assembler/compiler bug while you are still wet behind the ears will kill you. Many have criticized IAR but never, to my knowledge, for creating bad executables.
