ISP is very useful especially in development stage but we field service engineers often bring with us a laptop and a universal programmer with USB port. In the field you do not only meet MCUs but also PLDs, and universal meant that when we come to PLD it must support all types from PAL to GAL not just 16v8 and 22v10 as some univeral prog does. eg.TOP2005
