After I wrote the original post I realized that this could indeed happen, and that the best thing to do would be to strobe a watchdog with a signal that the application controls, that way it is more likely to stop strobing if the application gets lost, but the micro is still running.

(If this becomes a duplicate post, it is because I resubmitted the form data). How about an edit option?
