Mike, this is not rocket science! 1 character time = 10/baudrate (assuming 8 bit mode). Therefore at 9600 baud, 10/9600 = 1042us per char. Assuming a 12clocker cpu @ 12MHz, each machine cycle is 1us, so you would get 1042 machine cycles between characters.
