It happens that I published a Bible about a year ago using one of those print-to-pdf freeware utilities Kiran spoke of. It's a compilation of pdf files formatted especially for printing on loose leaf paper. Anyway, the entire compillation is over 23 MBytes.

Now I'm putting together a new version intended to be read/used on a computer. In order to do this, to compile all of the books into a single file with bookmarks for easy navigation, I sprang for an actual Adobe Acrobat package.

The difference in file size is approximately a factor of 5. In other words, the original files I produced with the freeware print driver occupied over 23 MBytes of disk space, but the new ones that I am producing with the Adobe software look like they're only going to take up about 5 MBytes.

Obviously I can't speak intelligently about the myriad freeware utilities out there, but clearly the difference in output file size (and quality for that matter, especially if you use certain fonts) can be significant from one to the next. This might be something to think about if you're using one of these utilities. It might be very much worth your while to try out more than one before deciding which you like.
