#115751 - The closest thing to RISC Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Jerry, Microchip tries to convince us that the PIC is a RISC cpu - unfortunately it is not. Brain dead, yes, but not RISC. Firstly a RISC cpu is not accumulator based and most instructions execute in 1 clock. An example of a RISC cpu doing video is an entry in the 2005 Philips LPC competition ( see www.circuitcellar.com) where a LPC2000 series micro is generating VGA. Recently, a friend asked me of suggestions for a simple design to generate composite color video (PAL or NTSC) whilst having a fair amount of cpu performance available. Possible suggestions were: OSD (on screen display) ic as used in TVs - not enough resolution or using a video encoder ic and a frame buffer memory with the cpu generating the timings via timers. Another suggestion was to hack a dvd player - these have an ASIC with a grunty cpu and video generation hardware inbuilt - try to get info on the ics though..... |

They'll have to be pretty fast ... | 01/01/70 00:00
Not really...? | 01/01/70 00:00
That requires a fair amount of speed | 01/01/70 00:00
1MHz | 01/01/70 00:00 | |
That's misleading in this context | 01/01/70 00:00
yeah but it ties the processor up | 01/01/70 00:00
That's a given. | 01/01/70 00:00
