2) assuming you are referring to the low side of the coil, you will need 2 things protection and noise suppression. For protection use a zener together with a transzorb with a slightly (.5-1V) higher voltage rating. You will need a suitable capacitor across the input as well. In many (most?) cases you may find that you need to opto-isolate the signal. This is not "easy street", an engine compartment is a very noisy location electrically.
