Actually if you read the definition of the MAX3444E, the J1708 part, a logic low on the TXD input forces the outputs to the dominant state, and a logic high forces the outputs to a recessive state.
Thus it *is* J1708 compatible, it just doesn't look right if you're used to "classic" J1708. It also saves you the inverter you would need to drive the output enable with TXD, as originally required by J1708 given the 485 drivers available at the time it was designed. Dennis |
