Yes, facts are facts! I do use machine sockets for the DIP chips that are optional. But usually 4 out of 6 parts are always present, so most of the time you can even do away with putting in a socket on the PCB. The firmware does not have to be revised everytime, and upgrades like say an on-site PCF8591 ADC/DAC upgrade or additional 64k of SEEPROM to the board is always handy (particularly for remotely managed devices). The wasted dollar (Rupee for me) only goes into some PCB space. Yes, we are moving to SMT components so this trick would anyway be of no use now. Girish |
