Yes it does - for the reason Erik stated (and I've highlighted above) I agree that the problem of post-regulator voltage drop could be a a big problem. However, wouldn't a large power MOSFET do the trick? I seem to recall these being available with RDS(on) of 10 milliohms and lower.
